A system for tracking energy use and carbon emissions in industrial plants

SCADA GENESIS64™ Decarbonization solution
A system for tracking energy use and carbon emissions in industrial plants

Beyond creating products and maintaining their quality to meet what customers require, industrial plants both small and large have turned their attention to production processes aimed at reducing greenhouse gas or carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere — decarbonization — because those gases are a major cause of rising temperatures at the earth's surface, leading to environmental problems that are extremely difficult to reverse.

Meanwhile the global situation has driven environmental activities and measures such as Net Zero and Carbon Zero, which will make "carbon tax" one of the significant international trade measures of the future — for example the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which will come into force in the near future.

For this reason Thai operators — particularly exporters in industries that emit large volumes of greenhouse gas — need to consider investing in technology that analyses the results of, or reduces, greenhouse gas emissions from each production step, so that emissions are of good quality and within the standards laid down. That protects trading opportunities and raises competitive capability another level.

The decarbonization innovation we are introducing today is GENESIS64™, a highly intelligent SCADA software that analyses the rate of greenhouse gas emission from the various production processes inside an industrial plant. It presents real-time visualization and lets you view the plant's carbon emission process hourly, daily, monthly and annually, so the production system can be planned for quality while carbon emissions in the plant are held below the defined standard, or reduced to the lowest possible level.

How SCADA GENESIS64™ works, and its ability to calculate and analyse an organization's carbon footprint

Ordinarily, the various production steps — fuel combustion, electricity use, waste management, through to transport — emit differing amounts of carbon. The intelligent SCADA GENESIS64™ Decarbonization solution software calculates the carbon emission from an organization's various activities, measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, and it can be divided into three scopes.

SCOPE 1 : Direct Emissions
Calculation of the direct carbon footprint from activities such as machinery combustion, use of the organization's vehicles, and the use of chemicals in wastewater treatment.

SCOPE 2 : Energy Indirect Emissions
Calculation of the indirect carbon footprint from energy use, such as electricity or heat energy purchased for use within the organization.

SCOPE 3 : Indirect Emissions
Calculation of other indirect carbon emissions, such as the use of office equipment or travel to off-site seminars.

SCADA GENESIS64™ pulls the data from Scopes 1 and 2, analyses it through the Decarbonization Solution, then passes it on to "Zeroboard" to be stored together with Scope 3 and submitted for verification with the TGO.

"Zeroboard" is another platform for calculating and presenting greenhouse gas emission data through the cloud, developed by Nagase (Thailand) Co., Ltd., one of the partners in the e-Factory Alliance programme, which supports SCADA GENESIS64™ Decarbonization solution in becoming a genuinely complete solution.

What are the notable highlights of SCADA GENESIS64™ in energy management and carbon reduction?

The strength of SCADA GENESIS64™ is that it calculates the tax a plant or business organization will actually have to pay: the system computes greenhouse gas emission data from every production step, then multiplies it by the tax rate the government has set.

- Where carbon emissions exceed the quota, the system works out how much tax the business will have to pay

And in the course of 2025, when carbon tax will be levied on plants and organizations, SCADA GENESIS64™ software will help prepare the report for submission to the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization), or TGO, in order to be listed among the companies or products that have passed carbon certification.

The SCADA GENESIS64™ Decarbonization solution therefore stands ready as a significant aid to operators and plant owners moving forward to become fully intelligent factories — and environmentally friendly ones at that — helping build a society that remains beautiful and liveable.
